Cosmic-ray electrons and positrons are much less abundant than cosmic-ray protons, but ever since the pioneering observations in the 1960's (largely by a University of Chicago group), have they been of special interest in cosmic-ray astrophysics. Still today, they pose new and exciting questions but also substantial experimental challenges. The observed electron/positron intensity may have contributions from several mechanisms:
